How And Why I Got The Domain

// June 16th, 2009 // Life's Happenings, My Reviews, TechBytes

As you people have noticed, my blog is now www.justsaaket.com from the earlier wordpress sub-domain. I’ve seen quite a few people on the web opt for a personalised domain for their blogs, and they do maintain it regularly, something which I need to imbibe from them. Also, the free version of wordpress had very limited options as far as modifying the appearance and site-content would go. Put it in simple terms, I could not personalize it to suit my taste.

I wanted to experiment with a paid domain and hosting for quite some time now. Also, It would give me access to cPanel which is supposedly a great tool. So began my hunt for a good hosting service. Eventually after lots of confusion over Bluehost and GoDaddy, I decided to go for the latter as it gave me a better deal on 1 year wordpress hosting (This just implies that they do the Wordpress installation themselves in the root directory, that’s all). So I paid a total of $47.69 for my domain name registration and an economy hosting plan(Linux based). My exact plan details can be seen here.

It was quite a seamless procedure to set up the whole thing, since all editing of the wordpress installation had already been done by GoDaddy.  All I did was to find a decent theme for the blog, and then transfer the old 0ne here. Piece of cake. Though initially I did get confused as to what to do, but GoDaddy has done all the dirty work for me.  Then comes e-mail. I can have 100 email accounts for my domain with 100MB of storage, and one main account with 1GB of storage. Pretty decent. Setting up the email accounts was an easy job and accessing the mail, even easier. I also have 100 email forwarding addresses.

This is what my control panel looks like :

ControlsAll in all, it gives me all the tools I’ll need to get a decent site up and running in a professional manner. Also, I can have as many sub-domains as I want in order to test all my coding. That is a really pig plus point for me.  Asp.net, here I come. Will surely do something productive out of this.Also, they have a lot of addons for the sites. Will try all and learn all.

As of now, I’m setting up google webmaster tools for the site. Will try site stats and other free features in the coming week. Vacations put to full use. With my internship mostly starting tomorrow, I have my hands full for the coming month, until of course, the darn college starts again. Mumbai University surely knows how to make life troublesome for its students. Until then, I enjoy and pursue my passions.
