You Can Build A Website Too!

// September 30th, 2009 // No Comments » // My Reviews, TechBytes, Tutorials

Its been 3 months since I bought this domain, and ever since, people around have been asking me, “How do you do all this?” or “How did you do it ?” and the likes. They think it is some herculean task, only worthy of the geeks to achieve. But it isn’t even remotely as complicated as people tend to think of it. So here’s my own nifty little ‘tutorial-y’ post about it.

Everyone I know started their online experiences with websites by staring their very own blog using the numerous services available on the web today, the most popular being Blogger and Wordpress. Just create an account with them and select a theme to suit yourself, and you’re ready to go with your first post. All in a matter of minutes. Sounds simple ? So, why would anyone want to anyone want to take the trouble of setting up their independent site and maintain it ?

How And Why I Got The Domain

// June 16th, 2009 // 1 Comment » // Life's Happenings, My Reviews, TechBytes

As you people have noticed, my blog is now www.justsaaket.com from the earlier wordpress sub-domain. I’ve seen quite a few people on the web opt for a personalised domain for their blogs, and they do maintain it regularly, something which I need to imbibe from them. Also, the free version of wordpress had very limited options as far as modifying the appearance and site-content would go. Put it in simple terms, I could not personalize it to suit my taste.

The Best iPhone Theme

// May 23rd, 2009 // 1 Comment » // My Reviews, iPhone

Ive tried countless iPhone themes in the recent times. But this one is definitely and by far the best (and smartest, yes smartest) of them all. Its called Glasklart and is available via Cydia. You get a custom dock and slider etc etc.

Apart from looking way too sexy, the best part about this theme is that it generates its own icons for most of the apps, as you can see in the screenshots below.

Best Online Storage Service

// December 17th, 2008 // No Comments » // Microsoft, My Reviews

I discovered Windows Live SkyDrive a few months back. But back then it was still in the beta stage and wasnt really appealing. After going back to it last week, I sure was impressed. Especially since i was looking for a place to safely store about 2-3 GB of pictures n some other stuff, which i wanted to be accessible only be me, and I was also looking for a good interface. The Flickr UI is not that appealing, and Picasa offers only 1GB. Enter SkyDrive. It hav a very unobtrusive interface, and that coupled with entire folder uploading (a feature that works only when you use IE). Still, perfect for me.

One needs to be extremely careful when choosing an online file storage service because you never know how long will a company survive if they offer everything for free.

iPhone….Worth The Price???

// September 3rd, 2008 // 4 Comments » // Gadgets, My Reviews

Most iPhone aspirants must be disappointed (read: me) at the over-the-top pricing of the “gadgety” phone that we are all so in awe of. On an average, an iPhone aspirant would have settled for a 20K price tag, but paying four times the US$ price tag is something none of us none come to terms with. Is there a reason why the iPhone is so expensive? What were Apple and gang (service providers) thinking? I can certainly see some very obvious reasons why Apple thinks that they got the math absolutely right. Let me speculate – it’s better than cribbing about the pricing over and over again.

1. APPLE IS NOT NOKIA
Apple might think – Apple products are priced higher because they are meant for a different class. An Apple user is not an average daily computer user; he is in a different league. And I do think they think right….
While Apple may have finally come to terms with the reality of making numbers in a country like India, they still don’t want to be seen as a product tat is bagged by the masses and has competition from fifty other products. By pricing the iPhone at a price which can only be reached by a select few, Apple is sending a clear message on the premium positioning of the iPhone in India. While I personally wished the iPhone was priced 10K lower, subconsciously, the pricing makes sense to me. The wow factor of the iPhone has been maintained by ensuring that not every second guy in the mall is yapping on an iPhone.
