As Luck Would Have It….

// September 27th, 2008 // Life's Happenings

It was an average Wednesday evening for me. Had college till 5 pm and returned back home after that. Mess around on my computer with load music on in the background. Its now late in the evening; dad returns home from his clinic. Still an average day. Nothing exciting or new.
Singapore Grand Prix up this weekend and being an ardent F1 fan/follower, I’m always in the hope of going some day to witness a race. At the dinner table, I casually talk to dad about the race…and that Id love to be there for the weekend. And he gives me this ‘So-what-its-not-a-big-deal’ kind of a look and starts checking out tickets for me to fly out Saturday Morning! “(STUNNED)” Visa could be done in a day. But this is the easy part.
Also, I have a friend there with whom i could stay and watch the race..(Its a street race na..something could be arranged to watch d race…coz grand stand tickets were sold out almost a month and a half ago)…So in all excitement and surprise i call up my friend there; 12 midnight there and hes almost off to sleep. I tell him about my plans and make it evident that i really wanna be there this weekend. But actually things cannot be so easy. I could not stay with him as he stays with some family there as a paying guest.

So hotels need to be found out. Still okayish. Then what about watching the race ? He said hes going to watch the race from the top of his office building with his colleagues and since all other places alongside the track are closed through the week….finding a place to watch the race in such a manner that i could actually ‘vasoolofy’ the money my dad spends to send me there was almost an impossible task. Still, my good friend tell me that he will let me knoww within the next 12 hours if something worthwhile could be done.
Oozing with optimism and excitement, I head off to bed, with all hopes that ill be leaving in 2 days. Morning I head off to college, awaiting the coveted message/call from my friend every other second. Some time later my phone vibrates! It was a text from him. It would tell me if i should keep my excitement alive till the weekend or fizzle out and make alternate plans for the weekend…
Aaah! It said that he could not get a worthwhile place for us to watch the race properly, the tickets to the grand stand cost SGD 5000 ( that’s like 150000 Indian rupees!)and that I cant enter his office premises on weekends without an employee swipe card. And accomodation is secondary here, coz if one cant watch the race from a good position, whats thew whole point of going there? Also, one more thing i found out was that even the 1,2,3 star hotels were charging anything in between US$350-US$450 per night on race weekends! Heck who pays 50000 for accomodation for 3 nights in singapore ??!! That too without a grand stand ticket! Hehe! So im not going!
But yes, it was something different; in what way? Generally, in such cases everything goes well and fine till parent intervention. But in my case, parents agree and other things do not work out! I wont say I didn’t get disappointed, but yes, when my parents agreed to let me go that night, really…..okay cant find the right words to describe it…its a great feeling you know! When I do think of something appropriate for it, ill edit this post.
As im finishing off this post, I would have been on the singapore airlines flight right now, going to witness histopr in the making, THE FIRST EVER NIGHT RACE, had all gone well. But so what ?! I watch the race at home with friends, rooting for mclaren to win, followed my my freshers party that night at PLAY !! Its not going to be a bad weekend after all !
